sightseeing and things to do

The country attracts tourists due to its culture and lifestyle that doesn’t exist in the surrounding region anymore - it`s like revisiting the past. Here are some attractions you may want to visit after landing off from your cheap flight to Laos:

The magnificent Pha That Luang stupa is an important monument. After its destruction in the early 18th century, it was reconstructed by the French in 1931. There are several walkways that represent various stages of Buddhist insights. The highest level represents the world of nothingness and lowest represents the material world. The WatXieng Thong temple, which is located in the northern tip of peninsula, is Luang Prabang`s most famous temple. Built in the mid-16th century under the command patronage, it contains a rare Buddha statue.

Most of the transportation is done through Mekong river. The northern part of the Mekong River is considered to be the most beautiful. A boat tour from HuayXai is the best way to experience this river. The Si Phan Don which stands for 4000 islands, is an amazing set of islands on a scenic part of Mekong River. Located in southern parts, boats can’t cross this part of the river due to the series of rapids and the Khone Falls. Three islands which can provide accommodation for tourists are Don Khon, Done Kong and Don Det. The lodging here is mostly run by families. Kayaks and bikes can be hired or rented for transportation.

Vang Viengis a small town located on a riverside and four hours from the capital. It`s mainly popular for the stunning karst hill landscape. Moreover, the streets have small hotels, bars, restaurants and other shops. There are also Limestone Mountains in the surrounding area, a great temptation for climbers. The beautiful underground tunnels and caves are also popular among visitors. The Pak Ou Caves are known for their small-scale Buddha sculptures. Located north of Luang Prabang along the Mekong River, the caves contain hundreds of these wooden Buddhist statues.
The most popular attraction is Luang Prabang. It is an enchanting city with most of its parts located on the riversides. Wooden houses, French provincial buildings and golden roofed temples populate the main parts of the city. Wat Phuis a temple situated at the base of Phu Kao Mountain. Even though the temple is probably 800 hundred years old, it is still in use as a Buddhist site today.

Vientiane is the capital. Home to Pha That Luang, the city offers a lot for tourists. The roads and streets are lined with Buddhist temples, French colonial Buildings, markets, restaurants, etc. There is also a Buddhist park outside the city that contains around 200 sculptures.
