The Semien Mountain National park is located in the northern part Gondar region in Amhara one of the ethnic divisions of the country. The region is extremely famous, as the territories include the highest spot of Ethiopia, known as Ras Dashan and also the breathtaking and magical Semien Mountains which highly grabs the attention of the tourists annually and force them to take flights to Addis Ababa to explore the fascinations and wonders of the area.
It was inaugurated by Clive Nicolin 1969, wrote down about his adventures and thrills in ‘From the Roof of Africa ‘ and appreciated this inspiring place. The park is included in the list of first ever sites that were declared by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. It act as a wonderful osais haven for a diverse variety of endangered and rare animal breeds like Gelada Baboon, Walia Ibex (does not exist in any other part of the world) and Ethiopian wolf. More than 50 breeds of birds can be spotted in this splendid park area that includes the impressive and colorful Lammergeier and Bearded Vulture.
The Mountains serves as the most spectacular site for the tourists-the peaks always remains covered in snow. These mountains are considered to be unique and distinctive because of their geological origin and they also offer shelter to many animal species like Caracal, Ethiopian wolves, Gelada Baboon and Walia Ibex. They further consist of plateaux that are separated by numerous valleys and erected pinnacles. The most worth-watching and notable point here is the Ras Dashen also known as the ‘head guard’ and is known to be the top-most summit of Ethiopia. It has the height of approximately 4,550 metres and Galinier and Ferret who were the French officers were the 1st one to carry out the expedition in 1841. At the top which lies at 4,300 metres there lies a mini fort that served the purpose of a protected enclosure during the 19th century war and now it is accessible on foot (journey of 1 hour).
The picturesque landscape of Semien Mountains came into being due to the gigantic seismic activity that occurred approximately 40 million years ago and at that time almost 300 metres denser melted magma over flew the earth’s crust. Those consecutive erosions left behind a number of chasms, precipices and gorges. The most famous apogees can be found in the nearby area-that rise haphazardly and were formed as the end product of solidified lava. You will love to have the enticing trekking experience but don’t forget to ask the assistance of a professional guide along the mountain ridges and lush green grasslands.
There are many mind-engaging and appealing baboons that stroll in groups around escarpments and the cliffs. The most stunning feature of the park is its relaxed and tranquil offering ambiance, as it is not very vibrant and bustling with large crowd of people. It also houses many botanical regions cultivated with the vegetations of Red Hot Pokers, Giant Lobelia and heathers.
