Singapore is a tiny but prosperous country. With an aging population and a talented youth, the country has no other option but to automate many labour intensive facilities. A recent inclusion to this growing list of futuristic transformations is the Changi International Airport in Singapore. The airport has just completed a smaller fourth terminal, but the terminal acts as a nursery and testing grounds for a much larger project.
The Terminal 5 of Singapore’s Changi International is set to be completed by the end of 2020. This terminal is destined to be the most automated terminal in the world. The Singapore government and the many firms that keep the airport up and running have combined their strengths to bring the techno-future to the demanding present.
The 2020 vision
Pitching this proposal the authorities provoke us to imagine a usual landing at the futuristic Terminal 5 at Changi Airport in the year 2020. The aeroplane would be guided by a forest of cameras, which would be scanning the landing aircraft and by using cutting-edge image processing techniques, help the aeroplane land safely. This would bypass the entire control tower of the airport. As the passengers would begin to unbuckle and get ready to move out of the aeroplane, an unmanned laser-guided aerobridge would dock with the doors. Robotic arms, like tentacles of an octopus, would quickly start to unload the passengers’ luggage from the cargo hold.
Artificial Intelligence 2.0
This hi-tech advancement is not in the setting up phase, as it is already implemented at the airport on a limited level. The Singapore Civil Aviation Authority and SATS (the ground-handling and in-flight catering firm working at the airport) have already introduced remote-controlled luggage vehicles that carry the luggage from the plane to the baggage handling area in just 10 minutes! Furthermore, the airport has light-detecting dining trolleys that transport 200 kilograms of food to the aeroplanes in just one trip. The ambitious project of making the “smartest and most automated airport in the world” is just the next step in the evolution that Changi International Airport is aiming to achieve.
