  Virgin resumes Sydney-Canberra flights
THE Sydney-Canberra air route is open to competition from today as Virgin Blue resumes flights between the two cities. The airline, which withdrew from the route two-and-a-half years ago, will operate eight daily flights with the first lifting off this morning at 6.25am (AEDT).

The busy route has been monopolised by Qantas despite attempts by Virgin Blue and Rex Regional Express to provide competition.

Virgin Blue chief executive Brett Godfrey said the airline would bring back "some fair competition" to the route.
"Canberra-Sydney is one of the last remaining monopoly routes in this country," he said.
"We are ready, willing and able with the right jet, to step up to the plate and provide the competitive choice Canberra travellers deserve."  Virgin Blue already operates flights between Canberra-Brisbane, Canberra-Melbourne and Canberra-Gold Coast.  It is looking to add capacity on those routes as it takes delivery of more 737 and Embraer aircraft during 2008.
