As coffee is homegrown here in Canberra it has the best blends available. The competition is trough and roasters are normally the preferred cafes. The beans are compared against one another which gives rise to even more competitive nature amongst the growers. Currently one of the hottest cafes in Canberra is the ‘Lonsdale Street Roasters’ in Braddon. They have a very friendly atmosphere and is always bustling with customers, upon entry you are greeted by the warm scent of their in-house roasted coffee. The food is relatively simply but has that homely flavor due to the fact it is all cooked in a wooden oven.
Another café that is gaining much exposure nowadays is the ‘Bean in the City’ which is situated in Civic. They offer the typical hole-in-the-wall experience but they are big on their coffee and quality is simply superb, pair that with their famous Portuguese tarts and you have it made. If you head on towards the western side of the city you will find a very new café called ‘Harvest’ their menu offers a unique hold like their cold press coffee, or siphon etc. this is one place however you must try out.
Moving down to the south end of Canberra there are many other unique spots that are perfect for a coffee meet and greet like ‘Lava’ in Weston. This is a must-try place even if you are not meeting friends as they offer the best coffee on the south-side of the lake. If you hit up a tour of the famous Wollongong and are hit by a craving for good old caffeine then you must try the ‘Ona Coffee’ as this is one place that is very serious about good coffee. Head back up to the north side of the city and near the Belconnen Fresh Food Markets you will also find several good coffee options like ‘Beppe’s Tuscan Kitchen’ and at ‘As Nature Intended’ that are like coffee gems hidden among the many fruit and vegetable shops.
If you are planning an excursion outside Canberra then this doesn’t mean the end of good coffee – even on the outskirts you will find several great options like ‘Cork Street Gallery Café’ out in Gundaroo. They have a beautiful and rustic outdoor dining area that allows you to enjoy a slice of their fresh home-styled pizza with their coffee. The combination may not sound very appealing to some but trust us when we say it’s worth a try. If you go out to Bungendore then make sure you hit up ‘The Provincial Pantry’ for a bite to eat and some excellently reviewed coffee.
