Queensland tourism operators have their fingers crossed that Japan Airlines will not cut routes to the Sunshine State in the wake of the troubled carrier’s financial woes.JAL assured the travelling public yesterday that it would keep flying, despite declaring bankruptcy as its share price dropped to a new record low of just two US cents.

The airline filed for bankruptcy protection on Tuesday, $US26 billion in debt and reportedly with plans to cut 31 routes, 53 planes and almost a third of its workforce.

An Australian-based JAL spokeswoman told brisbanetimes she could not say if any Australian routes were in the firing line.JAL has direct direct flights to Brisbane and Sydney.”We have not received any confirmation from head office in Tokyo, so we still don’t know which flights will be affected,” the spokeswoman said.

“It’s really confidential, so we have not received any update or any information and we don’t know when that will happen.”Queensland Tourism Industry Council CEO Daniel Gschwind said any loss of routes and services to Queensland would have a “huge impact” on the tourism industry.”It’s a grave concern - flights and air routes are the pipelines for our industry, they are the critical infrastructure,” he said.

“Without flights, there are simply no tourists. We certainly hope JAL can continue to operate into Queensland and Australia.”Mr Gschwind said he remained hopeful Brisbane would not be cut, because of the strong economic and business ties between Australia and Japan.
