Cameroon gets first swine flu cases

Cameroon on Thursday reported its first four cases of swine flu, including one found in an American, state radio said.”Of 12 suspected cases in Yaounde, four cases of A(H1N1) were confirmed,” between July 30 and August 9, Cameroon Radio-Television reported.”The alarm has been raised,” the station announced.

The first person to be confirmed with the virus in Cameroon was an American expatriate, according to the broadcaster.An awareness campaign on the infection was launched on Thursday by the public health ministry, the radio said.

Ports, airports and other entry points into the country were being targeted and notices would be stuck up alerting people, state radio said.In 2006, Cameroon was hit by bird flu and the H5N1 strain of the virus was detected in two provinces.

The avian influenza did not claim any human lives but affected the country’s poultry farming industry.
