BA Workers May Begin Strike Today

News added by James Smith under Featured, World Travel News

Workers of British Airways (BA) may commence indefinite strike from today, to protest management’s alleged unwillingness to accede to their request for improved condition of service.
The workers, under the aegis of National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) had been having face-off with BA, following the airline’s alleged refusal to abide by the accepted process in the implementation of the workers’ conditions of service.

The workers had also accused management of violating Nigeria immigration rule, by employing a British to take the job of a Nigerian under its employment.

Earlier in a protest letter addressed to the Deputy Director, Federal Ministry of Labour and signed by Senior Assistant Secretary of NUATE, Abdulkareem Motajo, the workers accused BA of unilaterally awarding 11 per cent salary increase to its Nigerian workers, in disregard to established protocol.
The letter read, “if at this stage, the Union allows current BA management to disrupt this established protocol of arriving at the review of staff take home pay in all NUATE areas of operations, then the Union will not only loose its credibility, but would have abdicated its fundamental responsibility guaranteed under Section 1 of the Trade Union Act 1973, CAP 437.”

The union noted that for over two decades, the process of arriving at revised Staff salaries between the union and managements in the industry had been based on joint union/management negotiations. Efforts to get BA’s reaction were futile.
