Australia’s busiest airline route has got even busier, thanks to cheap flights to Melbourne and Sydney.The number of people travelling between the two cities rose by 15 per cent in November last year, compared with the same time the previous year.Nearly 680,000 passengers flew on the route, according to the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics.New flights from budget airline Tiger Airways and cost-cutting because of increased competition is believed to have contributed to the rise.
Discount airfares hit a new low this month as low-cost airlines cut promotional prices by up to half, according to the domestic airfare index.
While capacity dropped slightly, 4.35 million people travelled on domestic airlines in November - up 3 per cent.In total 50 million people flew within Australia during the year.The route between Adelaide and the Gold Coast grew the fastest, surging nearly 37 per cent over the year.
Travel between Cairns and Townsville, Karratha and Perth, Port Macquarie and Sydney, and Adelaide and Canberra experienced strong growth.But travel to and from Cairns dropped dramatically.
Sydney is still the busiest domestic airport with more than two million passenger movements, followed by Melbourne with 1.76 million and Brisbane with 1.24 million.
