• The Palazzo Vecchio is the famous town hall of Florence. It was built by the Medici family in the 14th century as a symbol of power and strength. This is why, unlike many Renaissance buildings of the time, the Palazzo does not look aesthetically pleasing, at first glance. The tower of the Palazzo is off centre because the building was constructed around it. The town hall of Florence is an imposing structure with rusticated stonework walls and fortress-like characteristics that make the building unique. The year starts with the Epiphany festival, on 6th January, which remembers the arrival of the three kings bearing gifts at the time of Jesus’ birth. The Epiphany is celebrated by wearing Renaissance costumes and participating in the parades that run through the city. In February, the carnival or the grand parade is held in the city. Giant floats of dragons roll through the city streets followed by colourfully dressed musicians and dancers. The feast of the Annunciation and the Florentine New Year is observed on the 25th of March. The world famous Scoppio del Carro or the ‘explosion of the cart’ festival is held in April when an ornately decorated cart loaded with fireworks is set off by the help of a flying dove-shaped rocket, representing the Holy Ghost.
