Kuantan is a small
but lively city off the East Coast of
Malaysia, which also happens to be the
capital of the state of Pahang.Historically,
it is believed that Kuantan was established
by migrants from Sumatra in the early 18 th
century.Settling around the banks of the
Kuantan River area, the migrants first
called it 'Teruntum'.How the name came to
become 'Kuantan' is a mystery - some
attribute it to Chinese origins while others
say the Sumatran settlers named it after one
of their own places back in their homeland.
Over the years, rapid modernisation and
development has turned Kuantan into a
fast-growing city from what was originally a
quaint, quiet town. And because of its
beautiful beaches, especially those in
Cherating, Kuantan now attract multitudes of
tourists and locals who want to enjoy the
sun and sand.
Further up north lies the state of
Terengganu with its own myriad of
attractions. The state is rich with Malay
culture and traditional handicrafts. The
local artisans are heavily involved in the
production of silk fabrics that are woven
into 'songkets', Muslim prayer hats and
'batik', a cloth coated with intricate
patterns that reflect floral prints and
marine life. Woodcarving is along popular
along with traditional kite-flying, using
the 'Wau' - a large dome-like kite. When it
comes to visiting Malaysia, make sure you do
not leave the East Coast out of your travel
hit list. It's a Malaysian experience you
don't want to miss.
