Accra, Ghana’s capital city, is situated on the Atlantic coast about 25km west of the Greenwich Meridian. In the late 16th century, Accra was established as a coastal fishing port by the Portuguese after they discovered significant gold deposits in the hinterland. The gold trade was soon replaced by the slave trade, carried out by the the British.
