The airport is located 25km (15 miles) northwest of Melbourne.
Often still referred to as the Tullamarine Airport, Melbourne Airport (MEL) lies close to the city's Tullamarine Freeway and handles in excess of 22 million passengers every single year, around five million of which are international. Famed for its exceptional facilities and boasting in excess of 180,000 annual aircraft movements, most international passengers using Melbourne Airport originate from America, China, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom.
Currently more than 11,000 people work at the ever-expanding Melbourne Airport and within its surrounding precinct. With two runways (north-south and east-west), along with a large passenger building comprising three distinct terminal areas, the airport encompasses approximately 6,000 acres / 2,430 hectares. Recent awards include the Australian Construction Achievement Award, the IATA Eagle Award and the Industry Innovation Award, which was presented to honour Melbourne Airport's successful upgrades ahead of the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
o travel to and from the airport, car hire firms operate on the lower levels of the short-term car park. Taxis are also heavily used at Melbourne Airport and can be pre-booked if required, although many people choose to use the 24-hour Skybus shuttles and public bus transport.
Major expansions and upgrades are under way at the International Terminal T2, with completion scheduled for 2012.
