Currently the third-busiest international airport on the planet in terms of passenger traffic, London Heathrow International Airport (LHR) is just 19 km / 12 miles west of central London, next to Hounslow, Longford and West Drayton.Built to handle around 45 million passengers a year, London Heathrow Airport has become over stretched and is almost bursting at the seams.London Heathrow International Airport is close to the M3, M4 and M25, and is therefore easy to reach by road. Underground trains, buses and a number of coaches are also on hand, transporting passengers into central London and nearby cities and towns, such as Guildford, Leatherhead, Staines, Windsor and Woking.
Getting to the city:
The quickest way into London is on the Heathrow Express train, which leaves every 15 minutes for Paddington station and takes 15 minutes with tickets costing £14.50. Paddington has good connections to the other London railway stations and all parts of London via the London Underground (the tube). Dot2Dot is an airport transfer service that transports customers from central London hotels, railway stations and offices to both Heathrow and Gatwick airports. There is also a Dot2Dot service from the airport to Canary Wharf. Prices start from £17.50. The National Express coach service takes passengers to central London and other towns and cities throughout the UK. Heathrow is on the Piccadilly underground line, which takes passengers into central London in around 40 minutes and costs £4. Taxis are available outside each terminal, and mini-cabs can offer more competitive prices than the black cabs but must be booked in advance - call +44 (0)208 574 0868. Car rental companies operate from all terminals.
Airport Facilities:
Money and communications: There are ATMs and bureaux de change facilities throughout the airport, as well as post offices in Terminals 2 and 4. There are public telephones in the main areas of each terminal, as well as wall-mounted pay fax machines. Wireless Internet access is available in the Departures lounges of all terminals.
Eating and drinking: There are numerous restaurants, bars, fast-food outlets, coffee shops, pubs and sandwich bars throughout the airport.
Shopping: There are a wide variety of shops in each terminal including music shops, bookshops, newsagents, clothing accessories shops, electrical goods shops, pharmacies, sunglasses shops, shoe shops, sweet shops and perfumeries. There are chemists in all terminals; the Terminal 1 chemist dispenses prescriptions.
Luggage: Left-luggage offices can be found in each terminal, whilst lost property can be reclaimed from the Airport Lost Property Office (tel: (020) 8745 7727).
Other facilities: These include a chapel, showers, a visitor centre (tel: (020) 8745 6655) and a health centre (tel: (020) 8745 7047).
Car Rental: Car rental companies operating from all terminals include Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National and Sixt.
Car Parking
Numerous car parking options are available. Each terminal has its own short-stay parking lot, operated by the airport itself, which also provides the Parking Express long stay car park. Bookings can be made via the airport website (tel: 0844 335 1801; website: www.heathrowairport.com). Long stay car parks are offered by a number of operators, including NCP (tel: 0845 050 7080 ; website: www.ncp.co.uk) and Purple Parking (tel: 0845 450 0808; website: www.purpleparking.com). The Airport Parking Shop (website: www.airport-parking-shop.co.uk) is a convenient way to compare prices between operators and pre-book at discounted prices. Business and valet parking is also bookable through the airport website. A free shuttle service travelling between the terminals and the long-term and business car parks is provided. Valet parking is available at all five terminals; CPS provides chauffeured parking, again bookable through the airport website. Disabled drivers can request assistance from customer service staff at the car parks. Motorbikes can park free of charge at designated areas at each terminal.
