Glasgow International Airport (formerly Glasgow Abbotsinch Airport is located eight miles (13km) west of Glasgow, off junction 28 of the M8 motorway.
More than nine million passengers fly from Glasgow Airport to over 80 worldwide destinations every year, making this Scotland's busiest airport, closely followed by Edinburgh.In total there are around 40 different airlines and these include a number of budget services, which operate from the separate Terminal 2 building. The airport's two terminals are home to around 40 gates and are connected by a covered walkway. Glasgow International Airport has recently published a 'Master Plan', which outlines future proposals for growth over the next 20 years or so.
The nearest railway station is situated within the nearby town of Paisley and there are several departures to Glasgow city centre, Ayr and the Clyde Coast throughout the day. In addition to buses and trains, a fleet of airport taxis operate 24 hours a day and gather next to the main terminal building.
Getting to the city: Buses leave regularly for Glasgow, stopping off at the main railway and bus stations. The journey to the city centre takes 15 to 20 minutes. There are also trains from Paisley Gilmour Street Station to Glasgow Central Station, which is one mile from the airport and can be reached by taxi or by regular bus services from bus stop bay 1, just outside the terminal building. Taxis are available outside the terminal 24 hours a day. The taxi fare from Glasgow Airport to Glasgow city centre is approximately £18.
Facilities
Money and communications: The airport has bureaux de change, ATMs, a post office and telephones equipped with fax and e-mail facilities. Wireless Internet access is available throughout the airport for a fee.
Eating and drinking: Restaurants, cafés and bars are concentrated on the first floor.
Shopping: Shopping includes duty-free and a range of both everyday and luxury outlets.
Luggage: The left-luggage facility (tel: (0141) 848 4938) is open daily 24 hours. A lost property service (tel: (0141) 848 4740) is also available. Uniformed members of staff are on hand to assist with baggage.
Other facilities: These include a pharmacy, baby care facilities and children’s play areas.
