The number of passengers travelling through Dubai International Airport (DXB) is increasing each year and is now in excess of 32 million. Dubai Airport is sited around 5 km / 3 miles south-east of the city and is one of the premier airports in the United Arab Emirates and throughout the Middle East, boasting a multitude of facilities and services for visitors.
Two terminal buildings handle most of the traffic arriving and departing at Dubai Airport and are connected by repeated shuttles. Both Terminal 2 and Terminal 1, also called Sheikh Rashid, handle arrivals and departures. Al Majlis or the VIP terminal building handles private jets and VIP guests. The city's very own Emirates is the main airline at Dubai Airport and connects some 90 different destinations, having won more than 300 different awards for excellence over the years.
Various ground transportation options from Dubai International Airport (DXB) link the city centre, Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach. Buses, limousines and taxis await each arrival, while many regional accommodation providers can arrange complimentary airport pick-up and drop-off services.
Those wishing to have the convenience of their own transportation can arrange to hire a car from one of several major car rental agencies represented at the airport. Nearby, the port town of Mina Jabal Ali and the wealthy city of Abu Dhabi is connected to Dubai Airport by the D-11.
Dubai International Airport (DXB) Information: History and Facilities
Plans for Dubai's much talked about airport were drawn up towards the end of the 1950s and construction work soon began. In 1960, Dubai International Airport (DXB) was officially inaugurated and was soon serving around ten different airlines.
The city quickly became the ultimate luxury holiday resort and home to an increasing number of spectacular hotels, including the world-famous seven-star Burj Al-Arab hotel. By 1980, just over 2.7 million passengers were using the facility each year, and increased passenger levels soon meant the Dubai Airport needed to expand. In 2007, a third terminal building was completed, for the use of the local Emirates airline. Dubai International Airport is capable of accommodating the new Airbus A380 and allowing for passenger numbers to rise well above 30 million each year.
Dubai International Airport boasts a wide array of facilities within the Sheikh Rashid Terminal. Banking, Internet, entertainment, business, medical and postal services are available, as well as the G-Force health club and an airport hotel. A huge variety of restaurants are located on site, numbering more than 25, together with an impressive food court. Particularly popular is the Irish-style pub, the Lebanese bistro, Starbucks coffee shop and the Tansu Kitchen.
There is also a large duty-free shopping centre at Dubai International Airport, including the award-winning Dubai Duty Free outlet. Those in need of business amenities will find a large conference room and lounges at the Connect Business Centre, and meeting rooms at the adjacent Dubai International Hotel.
